Then starting in the late 1970s — about the time Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” was kicking in, and the South switched from being the Democrats’ stronghold to the Republicans’ — House Republicans became dramatically more conservative. Reince Priebus Calls ‘Self-Deportation’ Comment ‘Racist’

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus on Thursday forcefully condemned “self-deportation,” the policy of making life for undocumented immigrants so difficult that they voluntarily leave the United States.

“Using the word ‘self-deportation’ — it’s a horrific comment to make,” the RNC chairman reportedly said to Business Insider. “I don’t think it has anything to do with our party. When someone makes those comments, obviously, it’s racist.”
